  • Mr or Mrs Hampton?

Hampton AKA The Vulture is 17 weeks old, a lemon pyle brahma. Is Hampton Mr or Mrs? He/she is a gentle soul and can be bullied by the bantams nipping his/her ankles, but outruns them big time when it comes to food.

Any opinions will be gratefully received.

    Hampton's baby pics

These are Hampton's baby pics. It is hard to believe that he/she is twice the size of his/her bantam broody mother now.

Neck feathers look suspiciously pointed, but some breeds are much harder to tell than others, and I believe brahmas are among the trickiest....
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

I'd guess at female. But, as I've said hundreds of times, I know nothing! I'm working on the theory that I'll be right one day!

I have never kept Brahmas and the pics on the top are a bit fuzzy for me - could do with some specs!! - but I'm gonna plump for a boy

ok, we have brahmas, i think I can help. The males take weeks to get feathering on their backs. The females feather up beautifully very quickly. Can't quite tell from the picture but it looks like a female. Are the feathers on neck and back rounded or pointed?

It is hard to know whether the feathers are round or pointed when Hampton is the only brahma, can you tell from the attached pics?

Hampton feathered a lot quicker than the pekin that hatched a week later, I remember it was in patches, but can't quite remember which patches feathered first.

In the hope that somebody more knowledgable than me can tell, are these neck feathers pointy or rounded? (Photo in last post) Is Hampton male or female?

Hampton and his/her chums won't be let out of the run today. A fox was sitting in the flower bed near them at 8:30 this morning chewing while it watched them. I heard the noise and thought Hampton was trying to crow!

Tricky, how quickly did it feather? Were the feathers on its back very, very slow to grow - if so its a boy. You know, those rounded feathers on its back say female to me.Has it got strutting attitude?Wish you lived nearer - i could tell you in an instant!!!!

I am not sure which bits feathered 1st, but know it wasn't even all over. It is a gentle soul, never aggressive and gets its ankles pecked by the bantams when they want to get at the corn because it tends to be a hog. No strutting although when it's bantam "mother" was fed up with being followed around there were a few hackle feathers raised by both until it got the message. I often offer it a wrist to sit on to get out of the coop in the morning as the pop hole is for bantams and is a bit of a tight squeeze and it is happy with the arrangement. Should there be a sheen on brahma cockerel feathers?

If it's any help at all, my 'Babies' are nearly 17 weeks now, and the boys have been very obvious for a good month now. I'd say by lack of either saddle or tail feathers, yours is a girl. Fingers crossed.
