I think it WAS a predator after all, although god knows what because I didn't see any mark on her. I was just putting out my washing and a few of her feathers came blowing past, looked around and was shocked to see clumps of feathers i didn't notice anything missing on her, she looked a bit ruffled up that's all, anyway followed the trail to the dust bath under the pines where there was lots more fluffy feathers (def hers, i checked that nothing has dug her up)) so something not big enough to kill her outright tried to get her, a cat or weasel or young dog (the neighbours have one) so i must have missed other things on her, perhaps she had punctures in her neck, there was no blood on her feathers
anyway my remaining hens are shut in run now, think i'm going to have to build bigger run, and try to afford to fence out enormous garden as dogs etc can come in....at least i know now that it was nothing really my fault like broken glass or something.

If your really curious and not of the faint heart, could always do a post-mortem.
