  • collapsed chicken

this morning I found one of my old girls ( she is 3) lying on the ground in the ice and what is left of the snow. She hadn't been there all night so must have come out with the others this morning.

I have brought her inside in a box and she is trying to stand upright now and is bokking at me whenever I check on her. Her comb is all floppy too. She is a blackrock who has been a great layer but not laid for a couple of weeks. I thought she may be going into her moult but obviously now I'm not sure.

Any thoughts? I have to go to work in an hour or so so wouldn't be able to get her to the chicken vets til latest this evening.

    Thanks

Sorry, can't help, could be one of many things. Keep her warm and quiet, give her some mash and titbits, and maybe she'll rally round. It's sad when they go. ((((HUGS)))) from me.

Thanks, I have given her some porridge in the box - she popped her head out to see what I was up to, and will see how she is when I get back form work.

I have also shut the darn cat out who is very interested in the box! I don't think she needs the added stress of a large white moggy peering at her!

Hope all is well with your hen. Is she a little bit too fat? If so it may have been a minor stroke.

she is a biggish breed of hen but not fat. She is still inside been eating bits and bobs, so she will be put back in the coop later. I will see how she is in the morning. Think she quite likes it in the house, and cos of the cold weather wanted some tlc inside lol. A drama queen chicken maybe?

Three is not at all old.

She may not lay so well as in the previous seasons but she should go on for quite a while yet (illness aside). Hope she recovers for you.

This morning she was waiting with the others at feed time. I watched her eat and drink although she does seem a little bit unsteady on her feet.
I will continue to keep an eye on her and see what happens.

I only call her one of my old girls as we got some new ones a few months ago!

                      update

well after the poorly hen not being too bad for a few days eating well and drinkning etc.... this morning I discovered 6 had become 5. Found her collapsed dead by the feed bowls.
Bit cross at OH as he forgot to go check them last night (I was hospital visiting and he'd promised to go do it), so not sure if she died as she couldn't get up to get in the coop last night or first thing this morning.
