Hi all
After watching FAR too many re-runs of the Good Life, I've become more interested in growing my own fruit & veg, & keeping chickens for the eggs, especially now with the growing attention to food miles & organic produce.
So I'm starting a veg patch - I have a nice local gardener who is going to put me some raised beds down one side of my garden, I have a local supplier to deliver the soil, a local DIY merchant to create protective fences & a local shop to buy the seeds from.
Chickens, I thought! Fresh free-range organic eggs PLUS natural manure for the plants - Tom & Barbara would be proud. So I've put in bids on Ebay for hen house & run for a bloke would can deliver to my door, found a farm less than 2 miles away who can sell me organic feed, and the local pet shop can supply me with sawdust & straw.
Whats the problem then I hear you ask? Where on earth can I get some chickens from???????
I have spent hours trawling the internet & local papers & ad mags for breeders of bog standard egg-laying hens & can find none!
Can anyone please suggest someone in the north east of england who supplies chickens? There must be someone closer than Yorkshire or Oban. I dont mind travelling but think thats a bit far & certainly wont be very good for the chickens
