  • looking for 3 hybrid layers

my oh says I can have 3 nice hybrid layers for xmas. Is there anyone near me that happens to have some stock for sale. I am looking for regular layers, we have pure breeds and they are hit and miss in their laying abilities!

Last year they were £3.00 a bird around here at a local farm at this time of year.
This year they are £6.00 each and probably won't lay until after February!

I've got four boys, but they're going in the oven or freezer in the new year. At what age does one do 'the deed?'

Cockerels are at their best for eating about the age their sisters start laying, or soon after. Beyond that they are too busy feeling their hormones to put on any more weight, and they just get tougher.

Thanks Hilary. They will be 18 weeks on Tuesday, and, as we will (hopefully) be away, they will not be dealt with until early in January, at a guess. I don't expect the girls will start to lay any time soon, but you never know.

I paid £15 each earlier this year and as chicken keeping is getting more popular they've gone up to £29 now. They really know how to charge down south!

Come up here - my lovely food supplier let me have 3 Black Rocks for £12 each POL and they were all laying within a week and still are - had 3 eggs from 3 today! His pure breeds are only £3+£1 per week of age - so I had 2 11-week-olds (Leghorn and Welsummer) for £13 each and both of them are laying through this cold weather.
