  • Funny looking toe...any ideas?

    Hi everyone.

I dont say much, but i have been around for a while!

I finally got 6 chickens, 3 layers and 3 10 weekers. There all different breeds and to be honest i was so chuffed when they arrived i didnt really take much in. I do know that i have a Rhode Island Red and her name is....red!!

Anyway, i have this particular hen (photo attached) her name is Daisy Duke because she was the Roosters fav bird before she came to me, which is why she is looking a little rough round the neck.

The three layers are laying well and we get a good supply of eggs, so they are all well.

Anyway Daisy has always had this swollen toe, you can see it on the picture. I dont think its bumblefoot, but i do wonder if she has like arthritia or something. So really i am just asking what others have to say about it.

Also would be nice if someone could tell me what breed she is

Is she lame on the foot? Chickens can injure their feet and toes quite easily and usually recover with no intervention. If it is not bothering her then I would not worry about it.

Do you know for sure if she is a pure breed? She looks like one of the European breeds not often seen over here - with her dark eye she looks most like a silver Brakel (they lay pure white eggs) but it's difficult to say for sure.

      Hi thanks for the reply

No the toe doesnt seem to bother her, sometimes she stands with that foot up but on the whole no problems there.

She does lay little white eggs, every other day as a rule they are much smaller than the Rhode Island Red. Our breeder did tell me what she was but as i say i clean forgot (and i feel a bit silly calling her up)!

I do remember he saying we have one which orginated from South America, and as were in the Falkland Islands that sort of made sense, but i dont think that one is Daisy.

Oh well good news about the foot anyway...thanks
