You are totally right, if it was a fox attack, I would blame myself , if it was a 2 legged thief I would put a hex of bottoom boils on them but a pet dog attack is utterly irresponsible and unneccesary.

Another thing, none of the hens from that pen where the dog attacked has laid an egg since xmas - are they in shock?

Probably just cold Mine have laid the first ones today since the beggining of December. Could be a combination of cold and shock. I wouldn't worry they will lay again.

There are many different lines of German Shepherds. Please go to the Kennel Club for a list of accredited breeders.

There is NO type of dog that will be even moderately trusyworthy without training. Some are untrustworty in more spectacular ways than others, but the need for the dog to
              a) know who is boss,
              b) know where home is and
              c) know what the rules are
applies to all dogs, of every breed or none
Owners are legally responsible for any damage done by their dog (even if they really did take all possible steps to prevent, unless another person actually countered their efforts, eg some idiot letting the dog out of a secure enclosure), and you COULD ask for at least some of the cost of replacing the livestock this one killed.
Personally I would call it irresponsible to rehome a chicken killer unless the new owners are fully aware of the situation and actively planning to take steps about it!

I agree with every word, Hilary. If only people were as easy to train as Dogs!
