Thanks everyone. I don't believe it was lymphoid leukoma because according to what I have read, I should have seen lesions and I didn't, although I'm no expert! In a way, not having found anything obvious was reassuring. It was nothing I could have fixed and I'm pleased I made the decision I did.
Its Hilly, I woud have been surprised if it was myco as they haven't as much as sneezed in months. You can't rule it out though! You sounds like you have had a handful with it though and its a shame you lost some.
ON a brighter note, the nights are getting lighter, I'm getting lots more eggs and soon it will warm and dry enough to scrub the hen house from top to bottom..
