  • Newbie question re dogs barking

I am having my arm bent by OH about getting chickens, and having read up on here am thinking about taking the plunge, my only concern is that our neighbours dog barks quite a lot, and was wondering if this would be a cause of stress to the chickens.
There is a solid fence between us so the dog has no access to our garden, but I dont want to have chickens if they arent happy.

What about the Neighbours' Dog - is that happy!?

I'm not one to comment - I started with 8 Chooks less than 2 years ago, I now have...erm... just less than...erm...40!

    I think...

    * Takes socks off to start counting...

Hi Monarch, Welcome. Glad to hear you are thinking about getting hens. I personally think they may be on the alert for a few days after moving in if they hear the dog but they should get used to it quickly.

I'm sure some of the others will be along shortly who have had much more experience than me.

      Good Luck

Personally I would be more worried about the poor dog with the chucks! lol
They will be a little wary at first but I shouldn't think it will bother them after a week or 2, as long as the dog can't get in to see them!

My chucks are good with strange noises, will just have a look round to see whats happening, only one they hate is the lawnmower!

We have a dog that barks two doors away and they take no notice of it, my girls can out cluck him after laying a egg.

Started with 3 now have 20ish

          Good Luck with the chooks

I have a dog that barks kind of opposite us, (never shuts up when you're out inthe front garden until I yell at it)

My chickens don't seem to mind, the first few days they tend to nervous as said above, but as soon as they settle in and start popping the eggs out you'll have something to pelt the dog with!

nb: that's a joke, it'd be a waste of such lovely eggs

They do get used to noises. We tend to get low flying aircraft here - they scare the bejasus out of me sometimes but the chickens take it all in their stride. You won't regret getting some!

Mine aren't bothered by dogs either, but I wouldn't put a run up against a fence if the dog was constantly scrabbling to get under the fence to them - that might strees them out!

Crikey everyone, thanks for the quick replies !!

Thats made things clearer for me - the chickens are one step closer.

You may want to plan for say 1 or 2 more than you're originally intending to get.. when people say they're addictive, they really do mean it.

We live opposite the local hunt - some 80 dogs - the chickens don't care.

When Chrismarks says plan for 1 or 2 more I think he means 1 or 2 dozen more - we started off wanting 4, came back with eight and now have 34

also, if your neighbours have a noisy dog - you can get a noisy cockerel - stuff em!(the neighbours, not the cockerel...)

Ye-es My current Rooster count is five - they like to have a crowing competition about ten times a day. Good reason to go back to work!
Luckily, our nearest neighbour has a screechy little Bantam Rooster, so he probably can't hear my lot, which are the opposite side to him.
