    That's sad Sue.
After reading RH's advice about grass, mine have been allowed out this afternoon on to the last bit of lawn we have left.

True but how long would it last. We used to have quite a nice lawn but have put an electric fence around it so the chooks could have access to more grass. Having trashed theirs they now want the little bit I had left for my grandchildren to play on.

          Ruby update

I checked Ruby's crop yesterday morning and thankfully it was empty! Then later on she was settled nicely in the nest box and bingo! a lovely brown egg to say "thank you". Bless!

Excuse me for being light hearted about a serious topic but when I read the title of the thread, I seriously thought it was about squashed tomatoes or something similar. I was even laughing to myself about it here when I read the first post.

                      Sad but not really surprised

Feeling very very sad this afternoon as I had to have Ruby put to sleep this morning. She had been really well and laying almost daily but a couple of days ago I noticed her crop was very distended in the evening and hadn't emptied a great deal by morning. As a result of the distention her wound had begun to open as well. Yesterday she was stretching her neck up to try and move the obstruction.
I brought her home last night and gave her a special breakfast this morning with all her favorite treats in it.I took her to the vet this morning and after long discussion and examination we reluctantly decided that this was the end of the road for her. It was more sad and difficult as she was bright and "chatty", hopping around the surgery stealing the dog treats!
Despite knowing that this was a likely outcome I would do the same again as I still firmly believe that each bird deserves to be given the best chance and she did have a few more weeks of good free life.
As always she was a special little character and will be missed - her coop-mate is looking a bit lost this morning too.
                      RIP Ruby xx
