  • Can chooks eat onion?

What it say's in the title really. We have some leftover cooked rice. Normally the dogs get it but this has onion in it which can cause anaemia in dogs. Wondered if it's ok for the ladys as a breakfast treat.

I don't think so, but I'm not sure. In fact, I don't feed them to mine, so there must be a reason, but I can't remember what or why.

I'm sure, if you have a look on here somewhere, there is a list of unsuitable 'food' or maybe Google can help...?

    Good luck.

I don't feed mine onions but when they freeranged one day they ate all the onions and garlic in the veg patch and the eggs were fine! (and so were the girls)

Ours eat onions, when I make veggie pizzas if there is any left over the chooks get it. No probs so far and they have been eating them for two years!

Mine got a feed of left over roast onions - fought over them too - and they are fine today.

i go with John Seymour's advice = what they dont eat, they'll stamp into the ground and improve the soil fertility that way, rather than eating it and improving the soil fertility by their droppings.

Mine had leftover onions in curry for breakfast, washed down with a stalk of blown brussels. It could be windy here later....!

Finely chopped chives are good for little chicks.

I chuck most things into my chicken pens. The only thing I don't bother with is banana skin and citrus peel. They will leave anything they don't like. I find sometimes things need to sit there for a couple of days before they feel "brave" enough to tackle it, like pumpkins, then once they decide it tastes OK they demolish it.

Never heard about onions being bad for dogs. Any meaty stew leftovers end up as dog food (usually in 'flavouring' quantities) and I can't remember any signs of it being a problem.
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

Mine like parsley - I found that out when all I could find of my herbs was some stalks! They don't do tarragon though which is a shame cause it goes well with chicken
