Neighbours one side of me have a restaurant so late nights. Next to them also has a restaurant and when I first told them I was getting hens they said they hoped I wouldn't have a cockerel. Neighbour other side who looks after hens for me is fine but her son has remarked a couple of times about the girls waking him up. (Not at the moment but in the summer they are up early and like to announce the arrival of an egg).

Lack of available hens has forced me to wait. I rang place I got last couple of girls from and she has only got White or Sussex star at POL. All others are only 8 weeks old. I've let the girls into the fresh pen now which was ready for the newbies. Now I'm thinking perhaps I should have had what was available.

They will be with you for a long time Frias. Don't compromise. I contacted the breeder I got my girls from 2 years ago. He has only a few ready at the moment but if I wait till the end of the month he's have a bigger choice. I'm going then! (For 3 more!)

Interested to read that it is possible for slow introduction of smaller breeds to existing flock of larger hens. I really want some silkies and now have available, after very sad sudden death of our lovely lop bunny, a coop within my larger home made run. The plan is to keep three bantam silkie hens in this coop and let them into the garden when I am home for a bit more excersize. I suppose if they could see eachother constantly eventually the novelty of the newbies would wear off. I am in no hurry to introduce new girls as the last attempt was very stressful! The smaller coop would be ok for bantams, one of those all in one run/nest box ones that is far from suitable for hybrids.
Anyone know of bantam silkie breeder in Herts?
