Chicken Bleeding from wings ? being pecked?

Hello

I have 5 Ex - Batts. I have 2 i have had for longer than the other 3.

1 of the newer chickens has barely any feathers compared to the others, im not that concerned about that as she is happy and i have seen no obvious bullying.

The reason im writing is that the other day she had blood streaming down both wings. Dripping off her wings. I was wondering if this could have been caused by the other chickens feather plucking? Also i have been putting loads of vasaline of her now in the hope it will ward off the plucking. Is this the correct thing to do. I dont want to seperate her as it would be just as bad.

She is also very very red around her bum and on her chest. I have been putting vasaline on this too. Not sure how else to put deredden her bum!!

They are all red mite free and we powder them every time we clean them out.

When new feathers come though they are full of blood, and very prone to breaking. I went through it all with my African Grey, it's very traumatic at the time.
I was up with the styptic powder for many a night

That'll be right. You'd be better putting some purple spray on her wings to stop the others seeing the blood - red attracts them to peck. For the red bum I've used Sudacrem (or any other nappy cream would do) at night. Purple spray can be got from Horsey places - it's Gentian violet spray.

Thank you! I didnt really know what people were talking about when they were mentioning purple spray! But now i know, ill get some for next time i need it. I have sudocrem so i will pop some on nightly and hope it helps!!

Can i put purple spray on top of the vasaline? or should i just stop with the vasaline?

The purple spray won't "stick" on top of the vaseline. You can buy a purple spray with Aloe Vera in which I've started using.

dust with wound powder then put purple spray on, i wouldn't put vaseline on the wounded areas.

Agree with Sue and Petal. I'm curious as to why you used vaseline as it would surely gunge up any wounds?

I used vasaline as a barrier, to ward off pecking/feather pulling. Seems to have done the trick. the wings look loads better. But next time, ill use the correct stuff. I used it cos i wasnt really sure what i was doing! I did pop some savlon on first. :S Im glad i found this site though! People with experience and answers!!

I assume you only have hens and this isn't cockerel damage, do you know how the damage is happening? Although yes, the new quills are fairly bloody they don't usually bleed for no reason. I she rubbing against something? narrow door, wire in the run.
