  • Stovies as bedding...opinions please.

hi was given a bag of the wood pellets Stovies to try out as a chicken bedding, am not sure if they are good or not, yes you can clean out poo easily with them but not comvinced they give a comfy bed, anyone else used these ?

If they sleep on the floor, possibly not. But if they perch at night they'll be fine. I would'nt use it in nest boxes though.
If straw is hard to get hold of shredded paper will do.

after advice from a person on here i have been using the daily paper on the coop floor (only have to roll it up and lift out each day )and i put some wood shavings in the nest box, covered by a good layer of shredded mail, anything except any plastics etc,so bedding and nestboxes become an excercise in recycling,it is then put onto the compost bin and when i emptied it last week and put it under the veg patch, there were balls of worms the size of grapefruit (1/3rd of patch fed each year), and the birds like to settle into it,in their own places (only 6 out of 10 use the roosting bars),i have a 2ft x 2ft plastic g/house tray up one end and roll it all into that, seems to make controlling any lice/red mite quite easy as there are less places to hide in ..
