Today we travelled to North Lincolnshire to Outgate Poultry where we got our original Rangers, to choose 3 new pullets. We had no preconceived ideas as to what colour we'd get but when we saw them all we both fell for the Black hybrids. They have a deep green irridescence on their backs when the sunlight is on them, and some pale feathers around their hackles and breast area.
We travelled back with them in the back of the car, choosing 'black' names (Jet, Ebony etc) but when we took them out of their boxes and the light fell on them we knew they were too variegated to give totally black names to. One has ginger breast feathers - she's a real beauty - so she had to be called Ginger. We then looked for other dark spice names; black pepper gave us Pepper for the darkest one and the one in between is Nutmeg. We have our own Spice Girls now.
The run is divided and the Spice Girls are ignoring the Rock Chicks. They, however, have had their beaks totally put out of joint and are moaning like seagulls and dying to get at the new girls and wreak vengeance. We have 2 feeders and 2 water bowls at the moment and intend to give them their bedtime corn scatter together as they will sleep in the same house. I've unhooked the auto pop-hole opener and will supervise in the mornings for a few days! Garnet is whinging like a spoilt brat and Topaz and Nutmeg have had a brief go at each other through the mesh but it's going as well as can be expected at the moment. We may be here for some time!
