They were really kindly given to me by another Grape and have only come down the motorway about 50 miles. We knew that they were early in the season and some may be a bit old so the hatch rate probably wouldn't be great...I didn't expect things to develop so well and then die in the egg though.

I think its probably the incubator, which I haven't used before and is fully automatic. The eggs under the broodies have either hatched or been clear though two were fully developed and stopped just before pipping with biggish yolk sacs still unabsorbed.

Its all a bit sad really. One of the silkies has spraddle leg and I've just made a hobble for it out of a Band Aid. The broody then attacked the chick when I replaced it for some reason but I think its safely underneath her now. The other chicks - brown, russet striped, mottled grey and lemon yellow wyandottes and one silkie look fine so fingers crossed.

    Sorry for the essay!

Day 21 right on time, we have 1 hatched and 2 pipping eggs under Elvis the polish wotsit. They're cream legbars (autosexing) and I think we have a Kate!

I think we're up to 3 Kates and 1 Will (hopefully!)
2 more eggs to go - but one looked a bit 'porous' from the start so I don't have expectations for that one

Yep definitely 3 Kates and a Will! Lucky you - I got 2 girls and 3 boys and lost 1 girl first day!

Vicky, well done. Two on left deffo Kates, top right deffo Wills..bottom right, not a good angle. Any more pics? If it has a white spot on top of head and fuzzy edged rather more washed out colour body blotches its a boy. If no spot and clear stripey markings its a girl. But a couple of my CL girls were rather blurry and not as easy to tell, but the light head spot is a dead give away.

3 Kates and 2 Wills now (that photo was a bit poor for id ing the front chick I know!)
I'll give the last egg another day.
Nice to know what sex they are as we can handle the girls lots to tame them up! Although Mum is ferocious!

                    • Wasn't intending on hatching anything this year as I am full up! However, fluffy the silkie has gone broody again and so I have set 8 cornish game eggs under her. Goldie the Buff orp is also threatening to go broody so that could be some cream legbars possibly :-)

                        • I'm not going to hatch anything this year - I'm going to downsize, as I have lost two egg customers, that have moved jobs.

If I come back in here and start wittering on about hatching, please feel free to remind me of my good intentions!

                          • Anyone wanting to take bets on how long G4 lasts before putting eggs in an incubator or under a broody??????

                              • Just set some eggs for myself and an allotment friend in my new all-singing all-dancing incubator! I feel like a kid just before Christmas! I want to keep going out to the shed and watching it turn the eggs! I really do need to get out more!
