What have I done wrong?

Set ten eggs......two hatched but on breaking remaining eggs after 5 days overdue I found that 6 had dead nearly fully formed chicks in them!

I added a container of water to inccy on 18th day and stopped turning eggs.
I've hatched quite a few eggs before and never had this occur............any ideas?

One egg had even 'pipped on the bottom, unseen by me.

The only thing I can think of is that the inccy was in the garage becaue its noisy and was only brought up into tthe spare bedroom on day 18.
The thermostat was set when inccy was in the cold garage so maybe the latent heat of the bedroom has made it too warm...............yet two still hatched?

Last year I borrowed a second incubator from a friend and on checking the eggs I found a couple in the corners were almost cold despite it being fan assisted etc. Could the ones that hatched have been in a cooler place so not affected by the possible increase in temperature?
I've never been brave enough to check eggs that haven't hatched!

I think the move probably was to blame. The change in the outside temp will affect the temp and the humidity within the inccy. Out of interest, what was the humidity level? Were the unhatched chicks perfectly formed?

oh Snadge, I haven't a clue and can't help cos I've never hatched eggs but I just wanted to commiserate ........hope the two survivors are doing well .

I would think it was the move. Next time leave them in the garage until they are all hatched, then move to where you want them.

But on the bright side, at least you know Sid is working just fine!

It's always difficult to be absolutely sure but I would say the move and the water. If the humidity was too high the chicks can drown in the egg, the fluid is usually moist and sticky around the chick, the move would also change the temprature just at the wrong moment as RH says best to leave until the hatch has happened, then do the move.
Even very wet weather can change the humidity enough to cause a none hatch, it's usually best to keep the incubator where the humidity and temprature stays as constant as possible, i.e not a kitchen.
