Those pics are so shocking! I do hope the remaining three perk up and enjoy the spring (I'm sure they will). Do they have names yet?

Your post has made my mind up about next chooks that I may have. No fancy hens, ex bats it is. First time round I was worried as I had no experience of hen keeping but now two years in would happily take these poor souls and let them have a happy life those pics are are awful and should be put on poster boards over the country. So unnecessary .

They're already on my Facebook page thanks Jess. At least some are - the technology didn't beat me entirely!

I like this thread - it feels hopeful - I came on today just to see how your girls are doing!
            ....AND WHERE ARE THE PICCIES?????
I bet they changed, even if you don't notice because you see them everyday! I've taken on two rescue dogs (4 and 3 years ago) and when I look back at how they were then and how they are now, its lovely.
            cheers for now,
            JM

Well the 3 remaining girls are beginning to look a tad better! I'll take some photos at the weekend but my laptop is laying silly b's and won't download them from the camera so it takes some jiggery-pokery to do it!
The girl in ictue 3 who was comletely bald on her back has now got some little blue/black lumps coming through which are obviously the beginnings of new feathers and their necks have quills all the way down so definitely improving!
The vet asked if she could do post-mortem on the girl who was pts. When she opened her up she was egg-bound and had been for some time as the egg had become surrounded by some sort of tissue which totally enclosed the egg! She didn't send it off for analysis as she was doing the p-m for her own interest and at no charge to me.
Pictures as soon as I can!

That's brilliant that the vet wanted to do that Sue. I'm sure not many would. And interesting for you to know for sure what the problem was.

What an amazing vet! Actually, I have to report that our vet at berry house was very interested in learning about chickens, has enrolled for a course, she told me!
Would one get into trouble for sticking a picture of a battery hen on those cheap 69 pence eggs in Asda- with a message -'think twice before you buy these' if one was sneaky with yer blue tac - no one would know- freedom of speech and all that!

Some people just want cheap eggs, they don't care where they come from. And my sister in law says she actually prefers the taste of cheap imported bacon to proper home bred naturally raised stuff. Outrageous!! Sometimes you just can't win.

My wife said to me today when I showed her these photos that next time we'll take some rescue hens on.. which is great, as she's showing an interest now, plus it'd help a few hens.

She's a lovely vet Sally - she was a student of Victoria Roberts at Uni - need I say more! She has taken on board that there are a lot of people now with "pet" chickens rather than livestock and has gone on courses accordingly.

Its brilliant that your vet did a PM and good to know in a way that there was nothing you could have done for her (the hen)....looking forward to new pics of these girlies soon Sue!

                              Here are the latest pics
I've tried to show their new feather growth and their little pink faces! They look much less stressed now and come running when I go in so it makes it difficult to get decent photos but hey......who cares they're happy - I think!
