Chicken Mesh

Can someone tell me what the going rate is for this?, and what size I can get hold of. I have a bed 1.8m wide by 3m and roughly 1.8m high.

Also what size to get, there seems so many different thicknesses and size of holes out there.

Try Hills of Devon, they have a good selection, are the cheapest and give good service.
We used 1/2''mesh because it's the best for keeping out small predators such as mice, rats, stoats and weasels, also it excludes small birds. Most of these will try to eat and contaminate the chicken food as well as some of them harming the chickens. Because of the small size, foxes can't get their teeth in to bite it, either. The green kind blends in nicely with the garden but is a bit more expensive. It's a good idea to put it under the floor and over the roof, then you can rest assured your birds are safe.

I'm buying from hills of devon shortly - just wokring out how much I need. I've been in touch with them a few times about it - very helpful. Was just about to suggest combining our orders to save on delivery - but it's free anyway

I bought a load a few years ago when fencing in my plot - just searched online and bought that way. Don't do what I did though and buy the stuff with rubbish galv. Mine all rusted pretty much straight away.

How will I know the difference between good or poor, buying online you don't tend to get close ups of the product?

Does anyone have experience of hills of devon, and what there's is like?

You get what you pay for. I can't remember where I got mine - it was over 2 years ago - but it wasn't the cheapest available. It's great though - and no rust.

If you buy the cheap stuff from a well known auction site you'll find somewhere in the small print that its not fully galvanised or similar phrase. Hills of Devon do direct or the well-known auction site as Buy it now.
I've had several lots from them and have no complaints at all. As Flummery says you get what you pay for.

Thats great thanks suechooks, I hadn't been looking on the well known auction site. Well I did but it looked p poor. I'm after mesh which will hold its shape and not distort on the frame so I'm guessing this should be completely galvanised anyway.

Sorry, it was three years ago that we did our run and I don't seem to still have the link. I know Hills of Devon are good because lots of people on the other chicken forum I watch are always recommending them. I just did a lot of research and ended up getting enough green for the sides and top and a roll of the cheaper silver kind for the floor. I seem to remember someone warning about cheap Chinese imports, which aren't properly galvanised. It's a lot of work making a good run, you want to get it right!

edit; what you need to look out for is that it's hot dip galvanised after manufacture, which Hills of Devon is. The cheap sorts are made of pre-galvanised wire which hasn't got the joints sealed like the hot dip stuff.

Unfortunately I can't find any mention of green on their web page, so I'll give them a call.

Fortunately my dad is a farmer and fencer, so he normally provides me with the stuff he uses which is luckily top quality, albeit silver. I'm going to be making my ladies a much larger run and thought green would stand out less - but dad's never come across it. My present run, which was only meant to be their holiday home has wire all around, under, over (even though it then has plastic sheeting on top of it!) and under it - I wanted to make sure it was as secure as poss!

Funny you should post this.................

I put 5 chooks + psycho Sid the cockerel in a large ramshackle greenhouse for the winter. I'm in the process of constructing another greenhouse so have decided to leave them where they are.
The problem is, as you can imagine, it gets rather warm in a greenhouse during the summer.
And now to the crux of what I am rabbiting on about............Today I took the door off the greenhouse and constructed an outdoor run on the end. It's not very big, but big enough for them to get out of the greenhouse heat.
I bought the 2" galavanised chicken wire from B&M superstore for a very reasonable £5.00 a roll!
A ten metre roll about 2 foot (60cm) wide was ample for what I needed and a snip at only a fiver!

PS Just got round to reading the thread fully. If you want the good stuff, I can recommend heras fencing.

In that case you might do better to look for weld mesh rather tan chicken mesh,25mm x 25mm galvanised is available

My newest run is weld mesh panels but I've added chicken wire on the bottom half so I could bury it in the ground
