To be honest in my experience as secure as you think the run is a fox will test it to the limit and find/create weaknesses. I would sooner know they are shut away at night and fully secure.

Me too! Also I like to put feeders away overnight to deter Roland Rat from having midnight feasts!

I have the vsb opener. The only thing is that during winter I like it to open first thing, but I'd prefer to be able to shut the door as soon as they are all in, like an override. I have to hang around till the door shuts

I love mine saves early mornings in the summer and late nights

I have the VSB with the optional timer - at an additional £40 or so. The time means that both the sun has to be out and the time is past 7am before the door opens. In the evening its left to early dusk with the adjustable sensitivity of the VSB unit.

I'm thinking of getting another one for coop 2, but as it houses the cockerel and I like my neighbours I may just get the chuxaway (chuxaway.com) this one is less flexible and only opens up and down and just runs on a timer without any light sensing. It will mean adjusting the evening timer every so often to keep up with the later evenings but at £70 its a lot cheaper.

          The choice is yours!

£70 is still expensive.. surely they can't be that hard to make?

The girls free range during the day but after the really bad winter I really wanted to get them a larger run that they can shelter in when the next 3' of snow arrives!! The only 'run' they have to hide in just now is the roof of an old shed

The shed is falling to bits too so they are getting a nice shiny new house with extra large winter run

The opener is just to let them out early when I am not at home.
