  • Wood preserver fumes?

OK, after being surprised by my hubby yesterday buying me 2 new chooks, it means my plans to refurb the shed and run have been brought forward a tad.

Am going to spend the weekend slapping new wood preserver all over their shed and re-roofing and raising it off the ground, but my question is how long do I give it to dry/clear fumes before I can move the ladies in? I have some proper cresoste that somebody gave me, and I'm dithering whether to use it on the outside or inside...don't quite have enough for both so will have to buy some from DIY shop.

Would inside be best in case there are any creep crawlies in residence?

Tried a search, but no joy. The girls are homed in my garden for the short term, but its driving the dog mad because she knows they are there, and I don't want to risk any doggy incidents!

Been so long since I had some chookies, I feel like a total newbie all over again!

Proper creosote stinks (i like the smell mind) - in this weather (temp wise) and rain I think it'll take a while for it to dry out. Mine took long enough in October last year!

Not sure how long the outside stuff will take to dry - mine dried in a few hours... just the inside took a fair few weeks!

Thanks Chris, we are all set. Saturday morning, the OH and I will be raising it first so it is off the ground to prevent damp and rats, then the roof is coming off and will be treated and left in another shed to dry. The inside will be creosoted first and every nook and cranny will be seen to. While the shed is drying out, the run is going to be rewired and secured and all the bits and pieces like feeders etc will be brought home for thorough cleaning and disinfecting.

Hope to get girls down to run around end of next week then, hopefully that should give everything enough time to dry off and get finished.
