  • I may have upset an allotment friend..............

    .........but so be it!

My neighbours, like me have billeted some chooks in a greenhouse for the winter. I have taken the door off mine and made a small outdoor run for mine so that they can get away from the searing heat.
I noticed today that my neigbours chooks had gone very quiet. I couldn't see a window open in the greenhouse even though the sun was high in the sky and it was very hot.
I went around to open the window but it was tied shut from the inside. The door was also locked with a padlock.
I could see the chooks cowering under the staging and they appeared to be panting.

Even though it may upset my neighbours, I couldn't leave them like that.

The door glass was held in with glasing clips so I prized six of them out and took the top pane of glass out of the door. I could feel the heat escape instantly.
I then got some mesh and propped it against the opening so they wouldn't escape.

I think I saved the chooks from distress, I just hope my neighbour doesn't take uppance at my good intentions!

OMG - my greenhouse was 40 degrees today, enough to kill a hen if in it for long I would have thought. You did right and it sounds like he needs to sort it out pronto.

Some people are unbelievable. Well done, I'd have done the same thing.

I've seen dogs passed out, and one dog literally "cooked" in a car a few summers ago when I was a teenager working in a pet shop. That person needs a point in the right direction though, how can you be so stupid? >:|

Good on you Snadge! People are so thoughtless. I'd be mortified if I left my hens in the state some folk feel acceptable.

Chuffin' hell Snadger - here in Essex it was too hot OUTside the Greenhouse. Your neighbour needs a kick up the chuff!

Good on you Snadge. Last week a dog died in a car even though the owner was popping out every 20 mins and the window's was open a bit, there wasnt enough air flow.
When I arrived at my greenhouse today the max was upto nearly 50 and that was with the window open, goodness knows what it would be otherwise.

Too right, thats awful. Poor chickens. I hope they are ok. You definitely did the right thing, just hope the chooks are ok as it would take a long time for that to cool down.
Wish people would remember their responsibilities to prevent distress and suffering.
Maybe your neighbour should try spending some time in there. Sorry but its well out of order.

Personally I think you were MORE than considerate.

If I'd had any sort of trouble at all getting the clips off I'd have kicked in a pane at the bottom, one at the top and to hell with the consequences. I removed a LOT of those clips dismantling a greenhouse recently so I know how stubborn they can be.

Good on you, and if your neighbour is anything other than incredibly thankful and bordering on the apologetic - there's no hope for them.

Well Done Snadger. I was working in my green house on sunday, setting up my tomatoes, and was sweating like mad, and I had the door and window open. Poor little chooks.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

Well done lad. If you think he might be iffy about it, leave a note in his greenhouse. He wasn't there and couldn't see them panting, por little beggars.
