  • sick chicken, please help

    Hi All,

Well souffle is still not 100% but is doing her normal 3 days good, 2 days poorly routine.

My problem is Boo, she is my fiery ex battery, last week she started to look off colour, I noticed her bum was dirty. Her stomach was swollen.

I immediately took her to the vet, who put her on a course of antibiotics, she said that she could feel something, not egg shaped, but wasnt sure what it was.

She's been on antibitics since Thursday, she seems to be eating off and on, but her poo has now turned into a real vivid green colour.

They were wormed last week and also the about 6 weeks before.

    Any suggestions

What are you feeding, did she get something just before her bottom was messy?
Are the pooh's very runny? are there any other signs of illness sneezes, mucky noses.

she has layer pellets and only cucumber/lettuce left overs which were put in the run, nothing out of the ordinary.

I've popped yogurt into the run but she hasnt been touching it, this was put in to try and eliminate the issue of egg eating

I massaged her tummy and she realised what can only be described as the colour of grass, water... her rear feathers are yellowy.

The only thing I have done was bath her to try and relax her, and clean her bum

I noticed her comb has got a purple tinge

I think in another thread, a purple comb means lack of oxygen.. is she old?

I wondered why you wormed them so close together? The normal spacing for Flubenvet is 4-6 months, so two wormings in 6 weeks shouldn't have been necessary and maybe the double dose upset her. If you were not using Flubenvet, the other herbal treatments are more of a general supplement to condition and wouldn't be effective against a significant worm burden.
As she's on antibiotics it might help her digestion if you gave her some probiotics, eg Actimel or natural yoghourt.
With older hybrids, especially ex-batts who have been subjected to such intensive conditions in early life, one does have to be prepared to call it a day for them when it becomes apparent that they're past their prime and might be suffering or in danger of getting peritonitis. Sad as this is, they have still be extraordinarily lucky to have had the second chance you've given them.

Unfortunetly I took the decision that little boo was not going to get better, after a friend took a look at her and confirmed my fears, I let her go to the big coop in the sky.

I use fluenvet once every 6 months and vermx monthly- their monthly worming solution.
