  • Does my hen have a cold?

I noticed that one if my ladeez has a wet nostril on one side of her beak. Am assuming this is a cold although unsure as no other symptoms - I am new to chooks so would appreciate guidance. Noticed this evening early on. What should I do? Trip to vet? Garlic porridge? Could it be a one off?

    Hi VVG,
How is she now? It just sounds like a case of the sniffles, just keep an eye on her although if her symptoms get worse, any coughs or fluid from the eyes/swollen face etc, take a trip to the vet. It could be mycoplasma which needs to be treated with tylan that you can get from the vet.

Crush a couple of cloves of fresh garlic and pop in the drinking water. I find this clears up simple sniffles within a day or two. Otherwise, as Scarlet says, if it gets worse you do need Tylan from your vet in case it is mycoplasma.

She has been having garlic porridge and citrocidal in her water and I am pleased to report she is better.

        Thanks for advice!
