  • Spurs on chicks

    Hi

Just been looking at my chicks and they all seem to be growing spurs. Some are 5 weeks but I have some that aren't even a week old and look like there may be something there. Can you tell me if this is normal and if this means that all my chicks will be cocks?

    Thanks, Paul

Some people use these 'spur bumps' as an idicator that the chicks are cockerels. Its not infalible though as some hens have spurs!
My next door neighbours at the lottie tried for ages to get rid of a chook because they had been told it was a cockerel. They are now glad they couldn't get rid..............as its now turned out to be a laydee!

I have had several Hens with spurs - usually the dominant ones, strangely.
