  • Will Chickens eat Lilac?

Has anyone got a Lilac tree that their chooks have eaten? I've a potted Lilac that I want to put in the chook's garden - is it safe?

I've noticed that our completely free-range chooks only eat certain things. They seem to be hard-wired not to touch other plants at all. A good example is potato haulms - the written word is that spud leaves are dangerous to chooks, but ours enjoyed the occasional peck at the haulms in our potato tubs last year and it's done them no harm at all (so, they don't read the chookbooks....)

    What's the consensus on Lilacs?

Mine peck at rhubarb and potatoes, and love certain geraniums. One geranium that used to grow like a weed hasn't managed to grow leaves at all this year. They are also eating the Japanese anemone leaves. No problem with lilac leaves, or not so I would notice!

That sounds good...might heave the lilac tub into the chook's main area after all. I've put big rocks on the top of the soil to stop them digging it all out.

Ours love cotoneaster (sp) they've eaten every leaf. I must go and look at the geranium, see if they've eaten that.
