  • lost a girl today

I lost the last of my first lot of chickens today. A white star who laid the most lovely white large eggs. She was fine yesterday, then this morning she didn't look right, her comb was covering her eyes and she was doing runny poos. By the time I got home at 3pm she was collapsed. I took her to the vets but by the time we got there she was really poorly so he 'did the deed' so as not to prolong her suffering. It wasn't a stuck egg and he wasn't really sure what was wrong - have to keep an eye on the others I guess.

We had her 3 and a half years ago and she was full of personality - she will be missed. I am surprised at how quickly she went downhill.

you poor thing, its very upsetting when this happens, I bawled my eyes out when mildred died recently and we only had her for 2 weeks!

It's sad when they go. I have a couple of my oldies looking 'peaky' at the moment - I don't think the hot spell has helped them, even though they have plenty of shade. One of mine is pushing 4 years of age, so may not rally, but we'll see - they're tough little wotsits.

Sorry to hear your news Janeyo. They are such characters that you really miss them when they've gone. I guess the only positive is how quickly it happened - she shouldn't have suffered too much.
        Cheers

Its sad when it happens but unfortunately its the only true certainty in life!

I also have an old brown hen who is staying away from the rest. I'm half expecting to find her 'passed away' when I get to the lottie this evening.........if she rallies it will gladden my heart though!
