  • One chicken left and she's acting odd :(

For the last 18 months I have had 3 hens. Recently one of them kicked the bucket, not sure why but her comb was dark purple and she had lost about 50% of her body weight. A fortnight later number 2 got taken by a fox, and now we just have one left.

She is scared of the coop (maybe the fox incident?) and has taken to hiding in odd places at night, making it tricky to get her into the coop so we can close the door.

    Is this normal?

Maybe she finds the ladders too hard to get into the coop? She is about 2 years old. Just thought, while typing this, the food and water are in the coop; should I put something outside for her incase she is finding it hard to get into it?

She is slow, not lively at all, very quiet and just mopes around.

    Thanks

I would guess she is lonely but I am new to chook keeping. Sounds like pining.

Get her a companion. You don't say how long she has been on her own but if it has been a few weeks then she really should have another hen or two for company. Also check the hen house thoroughly for red mite as this will put hens off going inside.
