  • Strange Silver Sussex

Well I started with a trio from a breeder who shows his better birds (mine aren't show birds). They lay lovely big pale eggs. However last back end I added three more hens from an auction, entered by someone who does have s-sussex, who have a bigger body and more white on their necks as my originals are very dark. Now they are all in lay and my new girls are laying BROWN eggs. One is a pinky brown, one typical hybrid colour brown and the third is dark with little speckles, just like my cuckoo maran's.
I rather think they may be hybrids or even speckledys, although they do have the right eye and leg colour and to my dodgy eye seem to be the same type.
DO silvers lay brown eggs? Or am I right in thinking that they don't.
These girls are very good layers so if they are 'summut else' they'll get run with the other layers instead.
Anyone who says nothing is impossible has never tried slamming a revolving door

I have always had a few Silver Sussex (although at the moment I've only got a couple of bantams,) they have all laid pale eggs, never brown.I hatched a cuckoo maran x sussex cross end of jan ( the Banty goes where he fancies!) and has all markings of a silver Sussex, so going on that I wouldn't be surprised if you have a first cross of something.

"Let the buyer beware" is so apt if you buy at auctions!!
