  • WD40 on scaley leg

Went to pick up two new Silkies girls, i pointed out one of the girls looked like she had scaly leg, She suggested spraying on WD40 I couldn't believe it, has anyone else heard of this?

i sprayed her (scaly leg spray not WD40) when i got home and then rubbed in some aloe vera to sooth the pain

Thank heavens for that jimred! When I read the title I thought you were going to recommend it! There seem to be no barriers to what some people will spray on these poor birds legs.
I think I'd have been inclined to leave the birds where they were.(Actually I wouldn't - I'd have felt sorry for them and brought them home just as you did!)
You'll need to treat all your birds if the new one has got SLM. Good job you were prepared with the right stuff.

I agree - there seems to be no limit to the nasty things you 'can use' for scaly leg.

I have a problem with scaley leg here and use Vaseline but it is messy!

I've never had scaley leg in my own birds but two of my three "rescue" cocks came with it and I dunked the legs in surgical spirit (hold the legs in for at least 3 mins) and that worked well. The scales take a while to moult off but it does become obvious after a while that things are getting better, not worse. If the spirit stings, which some people claim it does, I saw no sign of it doing so in the boys I treated - in fact they were extremely compliant and were quite happy to stand in a jar of the stuff on my kitchen table! I was told of this remedy quite a few years ago by a farmer's wife and since then have read that Victoria Roberts recommends it too. She also suggests a repeat dunking after a week and two week intervals.

Before you all get ... erm ... uppity - I think you'll find that the main ingredient in WD40 is very refined fish oil! So it may not be the bad guy you think it is!

No, I haven't used it, but then, I haven't had any Chooks with scaley leg mites (yet)!

I have heard of that before but I'd be inclined to use something else instead!

Sorry G4,but I would debate the fish oil content, think you will find that was a red herring put about by the makers as an explanation as to why it was so good at repelling water (WD = Water Displacing 40 = the successful formula number) The main ingredient is similar in chemistry to white spirit

I suspect the confusion therefore, is between Surgical Spirit and White Spirit.

I've got it (wd40) in a nick on my finger and it smarts. Wouldnt use it on my chooks. At the yard where my horse live Lyn cleared one of her girls up with purple horse spray, think its iodine based but dont quote me.

Now, being a self confessed expert angler....cough...cough...

Many of the elder generation suggest putting wd40 on fishing bait, to attract fish.

My own personal understanding is that WD40 USED to contain mostly fish-oil but is now full of 'other stuff' - thats a technical term.

Correct me if i'm wrong - it doesnt happen often!! hahaha!!

I wouldnt spray it on a chicken. or any other animal, or fishing bait either to mention it!!

I've used it on fishing bait......didn't work. Having said that, I never catch many fish anyway (going to Keilder on tuesday)

I had scaly leg on a few of my oldies.....used vaseline. Do younguns get it?
