    Hello

This is a picture of our 5 weeks old chick.

We bought 6 hatching eggs all light sussex. This is our little ugly ducking (obviously not a light sussex!)

The egg was the same as the rest but this little 'ginger' chick appeared.

It it only 5 weeks old and has a comb and wattles bigger than I have seen on a chick this age.

Can anyone tell me what breed/sex it is? Im guessing it may be a boy

    Look forward to your comments.

    xx

It's really cute but I'd guess a boy too. Shame but I think Jardiniere has hit the nail on the head!

It's a partridge wyandotte I think. By the flight feather colouring.

The bog standard 'ginger' chicken someone mentioned that are sold at markets are infact hybrids, Isa Browns or Warrens.

its a boy, sussex cross, not a wyandotte, comb is all wrong.

                  Could be a Red Sussex?

I'd go with a buff/red sussex cross too! Could be mixed with anything...

                      Now look at him!

This is the boy in the original picture and 2 of the girls, however I am surprised they have completely different sized wattles and combs.... is this normal to be so different at 16 weeks?

They all look very nice. However I would say that the LS with the floppy comb is not a pure breed, the comb shouldn't do that. Maybe a bit of something else (? leghorn) mixed in, although the feathering is correct for LS. Yes it is normal for there to be a difference in development in pullets of the same age, sometimes they come into lay at roughly the same time and sometimes not. I only got one girl out of my first batch of LS this year (hatched 8 March) and she started laying almost bang on the 18 week mark. I bought a cuckoo maran a few weeks ago, apparently her sister has just come into in lay according to the breeder, but my girl is not ready yet.

I was beginning to think that about the floppy comb, as we have a LS that is 2 years old and she has a very spikey comb!
