  • Breeds of chicken for eggs and meat

    Hi all,

I am considering getting some chickens. I would want eggs, and then probably eat the chickens before replacing them every now and again. Does this sound like a crazy idea?

Are there any breeds which would be good eating chickens after their laying life?

    Thanks

Not crazy at all! As chickens get to be tougher eating the longer they live though, you might want to think about doing the same as what I'm planning this year - I have chickens for egg production and I also want to use the same chickens to hatch chicks to be raised just for the table. There are several dual purpose birds that you could use, the ones I'm using are white sussex crosses and I have a Maran cockerel and an Old English Game x Rhode Islad Red cockeral too. Other dual purpose birds I can think of off the top of my head are ixworth, dorking, derbyshire redcap (all rare breeds). Sussex are fantastic layers and good eating too, Orpingtons are also quite big.
