chick advice please (legs)

my oh helped a chick out of its egg last night and when we checked it this morning its legs are all wrong he looks like he is sat on his bum is there anything we can do to help it???

Hi there!

The search facility isn't working at the moment- but it sounds like your chick has spraddle leg.
One of mine had that last year and I strapped it for a couple of days and it worked a treat.

Have a look back to last April and see if you can find my post- I've had a quick look but couldn't find it.
There's a link with photos from another forum showing you how to do it with a plaster.

Another grape had the same problem not long ago- and I think the link was put on there too.

Well worth doing...my chick was fine after 2 days! ( depends on the severity though I suppose- but mine was in a sitting position at first too!)

I had one last year which I hobbled on the advice of Nicos and it worked and mine wasnt even sitting. For the first two days of its life it swam.

Take an ordinary sticking plaster and wrap one sticky end round one leg and the other end round the other leaving the dressing bit in the middle and it should work.

thanks for your advice we strapped its legs andits doing great. how long should i leave it on for?

Glad to here it's working!!!!!

Mine dropped off ( plaster that is!) after a couple of days ...cos it got wet when it sat in the water to drink

It seemed to be walking properly so we didn't replace it.
Might be worth leaving yours until it drops off- but maybe no longer than 3-4 days??? before trying it without.
Think it's a bit of trial and error- if it's a very deformed hip joint then it'll never recover- but if it's mild- or a muscle imbalance , then I guess the strapping should sort it.
(Do check the skin is OK around the dressing-ie it's not getting raw)

just a quick update the day after we took his plaster off we came home to find the poor chook dead he was fine when we left him in the morning so we are a little gutted

Thats sad but maybe there was more wrong than appeared.
