  • Question about cockerels...........

I have four flocks of chooks with a cockerel in each and four young cockerels about three months old in another flock with four hens (all from the same hatch)
As the runs are coops are next door to each other and I have opening flaps between them so I can mix and match I was wondering whether I could do away with the divisions and let them all run tigether?
The only one I have misgivings about is Sid who is an alpha male and is a nasty bit of work.

Will they be ok or will it turn into one giant cock fight........with casualties?

Is eight cockerels with 24 hens feasible?

Put 'em in the pot, Snadge.

Sid will probably be Boss, and as he has an attitude, I would expect trouble. I now have two Cocks together, but they have around 30 hens, so 'take' some each. The youngster 'Whitsun' keeps away from Asbo, but they all roost together. Until a few days before Whitsun, anyway!

Bloodbath guaranteed! Keep them as they are. You may get away with putting the youngsters in with one of the quieter cocks (not Sid!) but if you are intending to fatten these youngsters for the pot then they would do better separated so they do not lose condition by being run around.

I've got four boys running with twelve hens. Two have always been together, and the other two were added as two odds at the same time, but there were about eighteen hens at the time..and my house move forced less than optimum conditions..but they are now so settled that I'm leaving well alone.
When my boss cock in the boys only pen died of old age the others who had co-habited happily up till then started fighting, but lots of noise and blood, no serious injuries.
Personally I'd try four/five together..but not including Sid. So it depends how many hens you keep back to run with Sid.
        Good luck
