  • Fayoumi chickens

I went to the Smallholders sale today, not to buy anything, you understand, just to look and say hello to folk!
I kept my hands firmly in my pockets as they sold the goats, even though my heart ached for them, resisted a Muscovey duck and eight ducklings(Went for 34 quid!!!) but was surprised to find I'd bought eight Fayoumi chicks.

Has anyone else heard of them, I haven't, even the auctioneer hadn't.
I have googled them and find that they are very good looking birds that lay pretty well. The hens start laying at 16 weeks and the roosters start crowing at 6-7 weeks!
They are under a lamp at the moment but as soon as it gets dark enough, I will put them under The Beauty's wings, she has been sitting tight on a golf ball for a few days.
I will take pictures and ask my nephew to help me put them on the forum as soon as they start to look like something that's not any old chick.

I've heard of them (think they originate from Eygpt?), and they are supposed to be pretty disease resistant (including being resistant to Mareks) and generally very hardy birds. Think they are quite uncommon so you are lucky to get some. Look forward to seeing the pics.

I resisted going to the Smallholders Show at Builth Wells last weekend as I know things would have appeared in my car without me doing anything!
Looking forward to seeing your chicks - I think I saw a picture in a book somewhere but can't remember where. Must go and have a look.

What would my hands do, Lettucegrow, if they weren't full. Know what you mean though, they are flighty little beggars already and know their own minds. Only two opted for Beauty's warm wings, the rest made their way back to the lamp and that, if I don't mind, is where they're staying!
