he won't cope with the stress of going to the vet, the vet won't have a clue what to do either, i'm afraid.

Hope he makes it. I am so lucky with my vet. He knows exactly how to handle the chickens and seems to diagnose and treat each time I've been. He doesn't advertise himself as a chicken vet but his father kept them. They never seemed stressed at going either. Also lucky that the vet is open 364 days of the year.

Sad news. We have a vet whose family kept chickens when she was a girl. She's lovely with them and genuinely likes them - it does help even when the news is bad.

wish I had a vet like that - instead of one fresh out of college that I have to tell what it is I need and give her the diagnosis! - at least she only charges for the medication mind and always thanks me for telling her what is wrong with the chicken - she has now enrolled on a special course, so things are looking up!
Edward seems better again today, I have put the laid back hermione(salmon faverolle) in with him as he seemed lonely and he has really perked up!

Edward update! looking better! I just read a very interesting article in practical poultry magazine about vitamin d deficiency and how common it is in large fowl. I will be picking up some extra vitamins today - it can't hurt and his symptoms do seem to match those described in the article.......

Good luck with him. It's horrid to lose them - even if it's inevitable in the end.

I knew we were on borrowed time, My husband and I put him down and buried him last night after he suffered what looked like a fit. We were priveliged to own such a beauty and its probably for the best that we never managed to breed from him, in retrospect.

Ah what a shame Petal. Good decision though if you felt his time had come.

Sad, but obviously for the best. You have to remember the good times, don't you?
