the wellhead is under the coop,i had a look at the slabs they put over it and they are 3/4ins thick and about 3x5ft in size,we asked our older neighbour and those slabs were made to cope with the weight of the horses stabled alongside,as for water,we have only had 3/4 days in the last 5 weeks without rain, one day we literally had a foot of rain, but then everthing is geared up to that type of weather,we would just like a break from it,its midsummers day, tipping down (being polite,as i can think of a better way of describing it),need the heating on and have to have the lights on as it is pretty dark at the moment, so no barbie tonight....again..:rolleyes

The well might be what attracts the rats. It provides a hiding place with ready access to water, and if the coop is on top, that will make it more attractive. When we lived on a sheep farm, one of the neighbours had a field in which some defunct cars had been buried (disposal was very difficult at the time) and made the mistake of placing the chicken house on that area. Rat paradise, comfy hiding holes underground and a dining room above!
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.
