  • Sneezing & Wheezing

    Hi folks

One of my girls has been sneezing & wheezing for a day or two - she seems fine in herself, still scratting around with the others and chasing off the wood pigeons.

Have added poultry spice and a bit of garlic powder to their breakfast and supper treats but is there anything else I can do. A trip to the vets for antibiotics is going to be at least £30 and funds are a bit tight at the minute.

Do poultry get colds like us and get over it?

    Thanks in advance

Hi there, yes, hens can get colds like us. I have used 'Respite' for the sniffles in the past and its based on lots of garlic. You can crush a couple of cloves and stick them in their water although if you're - using garlic powder then it probably wont do much more.

They should get over the sniffles in a couple of days - keep an eye out for any swollen faces or frothy eyes as this may be mycoplasma and that would mean the vets.

I'm sure the others will be along with more advice soon :-)

Polo's said it all really! Respite is really good and has lots of goodies in it but the garlic is all-pervading if you get the concentrate on you!
The changeable weather plus getting wet is conducive to sniffles.
If she starts to look unwell - hunched, miserable, frothy eyes, dirty nose etc then some Tylan (antibiotic for respiratory probs)would be in order.

Ditto what Polo says. I use fresh garlic crushed and popped into their water. If she is not better in a week it's likely to be more than just a cold and you need to get Tylan soluble (antibiotic) from the vet which you add to the water.

I can always rely on you guys for help - thank you so much. Am a great believer in garlic for respiratory problems - will keep going with it and keep my fingers crossed, it doesn't progress to anything nasty.

          Once again - many thanks
