If you can manage an electric fence, one wire not lower than 6" below the top of the run fence, and 4-6" to the outside, that would deter any fox. A similar low wire would deter digging under. Failing that, put a 'floppy section' at the top of the fence. Foxy will give up rather than try to scramble over if it 'gives' a bit when he's nearing the top. 3m is rather wide to support a roof, although there is no reason you can't put a post or so inside the run to carry smaller 'rafters' across....

Ok - Time for a rethink then. With the electric wire can the run be un-roofed then?
I'd need to do something over the back wall too.....
How high does my fence need to be if it is electrified?
As for the ladder - if that's not really needed I might make a drop down door and put a couple of thin strips of wood across for steps. That will solve the need for a pop hole door as well.
      Thanks Guys (and Gals).

I'd go for 6ft (ish), with the electric. The wall might be tricky, if there is someone else's property (or worse, a path) on the far side.

I used to live in Treforest and our oldest boy was born at Caerphilly miners hospital. He's 25 this year though....

A wall with a footpath beyond, foxy would just love coming over that! I suspect the best you will be able to do is either that plastic stuff that looks like carpet-gripper) no idea how well that would deter a fox, it's supposed to deter cats, but I'm not convinced) or put up some wire mesh that extends above it and ISNT rigid at the top. It has to sag (but not collapse) when climbed on. A run next to that wall is always going to be vulnerable if there are any foxes living anywhere near (and 'near' can be very elastic to a fox)..

Newtothis, I think putting clear plastic over the run would turn it into a greenhouse in hot weather and won't be nice for your hens, Pond netting might be better?

You'd think by how you'd be able to get out of the surrounding area Chris.

Why not take a walk up the Garth and have a look around, you get a cracking view of Cardiff and the valleys all the way up to the Beacons.

And what's this about short straws!!
