  • hatching advice please

I have a japanese bantam egg that pipped yesterday and there is still no change its still alive but the membrane around where the shell fell off is looking abit yellow
Do i leave it or help. it was due to hatch tomorrow but they always seem to hatch a day or 2 early.

It's not wise to help really - they are often weak chicks and/or deformed. That said, I often help out - I just can't help myself! How high is your humidity? Can you just try picking the shell around where it would try to pip, leaving the membrane intact. If you see any blood, stop and put it back in. You could also try damping the shell with some warm damp tissues. Good luck!

If it's not due till tomorrow leave it alone for now. You could damp the membrane that you can see, but probably the chick is just sitting absorbing the final remnants of the yolk sac. If you take the shell off now you could rupture vital blood vessels. Some chicks seem to pip early when inside the shell they are not quite ready to come out. If it is still unhatched in the morning, and seems vigorous and wanting to get out (loud frustrated cheeping is a good indicator) then slowly take some of the shell off. Sometimes if the shell is a bit too hard or the membrane tough all you need to do is release a leg and they then kick themselves free - I have had them hatch on my hand like this.

I usually have a much higher humidity than that during the last three days but if the others have hatched out o.k my guess is this one may have a problem. It's up to you!! Give it a go if you are prepared to cull if it has anything wrong with it. If not, leave it. Let me know how you get on...

Pretty much the same as Suechooks! 65-70% and try my best not to lift the lid!

Well done, and yes - where's the pics??
