i have had to admit defeat regarding my chooks,my legs are getting so bad now that i am having trouble just cleaning them out each day,i had hoped to be still doing it for at least another few years, but doing the poo pickup i am having great trouble straightening up again, not helped by industrial damage to lower and upper spine,so, i have nine assorted birds,in good health, that will need a new home ,and all associated feeds/feeders etc ,including coop,if wanted, is free to a good home, not keen on losing the girls but i have to be realistic about their welfare,i would hate it if they got neglected,so if there is anyone in the ayrshire/south glasgow interested, please let me know, they are trained to the corn tin, just rattle it and its like the piper of hamlin..

Oh dear Buffs that's very sad for you.
Is there no way you could adjust the coop so you can manage a bit longer? Could it be raised up on legs to save you bending to clean it. There's a coop in one of my many books thats constructed for wheelchair users to access so maybe something like that?
I'm sure someone will give them a nice home. I can't help out - distance being somewhat problematic! Do hope things work out for you

Such a shame, but I'm with the others -There must be a different deign that would be easier. Mine is at waist height and needs very little bending??

I hope it works out either way..

yes I agree. my coop is on a table and i managed it heavily pregnant and now with the baby in a sling. It would be a shame to lose out. I realise your lack of mobility makes conversion impossible but are there no fellow grapes who could help you? I would never have managed my girls with a floor level house last winter. Hope it gets sorted for you x

its not the coop thats the problem, its the slab floor etc,an area of 5mtr x3mtr,i am having terrible trouble keeping it clean as i would want,as the legs problem is progressive,i have to be realistic and solve the problem before the birds begin to suffer through inadequate care....so i got a call yesterday and in 2/3 weeks they will have a new home (2/3 weeks to get everything ready properly before moving the birds)and the really good part is they are gyo readers,so they asked loads of questions and checked everything over,i am happy the birds will be looked after and only moving to the other side of the village so it all seems to be working out okay.thank you to the hordes of experts that have made the last few years with the chooks so enjoyable,it was your knowledge that made it all possible,i will still be reading, following all the news, but with no birds i wont be adding much to the forums, best wishes to all of you,may you all prosper..

A happy ending. As Suechooks says, don't be a stranger though.

now i have them sorted, they have started laying only 4/5 eggs a day, they have always given us 6/9 a day, would looking after our daughters staffie(he is massive) put them off laying ? as they seem to be their usual selves,no change in behavior or eating,i have started to worm them now so they will be done before they move, i must admit i will miss their daft antics, but i have to be realistic.

Any change in their routine can cause a temporary blip in their laying pattern. On the very rare occasions I have to miss my midday visit (when they normally have their free range time plus their mash) they will go off for a couple of days. They could also be coming up to moulting time.

They probably will go off laying when they move anyway but they'll soon get back into the swing of things when they settle into a new routine.

mine sulk too. When I went on holiday for a week they laid when I was away then stopped for weeks. They are devils. Im really sorry to hear your news though glad your birds are not going far and will have a good home. can you have a smaller moveable ark and just keep 3 little bantams? Sure it could be kept on some sort of shelf effort and lifted off to clean while the girls run round?

the day we sorted out the birds new home we lost our 12 year old spaniel,so it wasnt a very good weekend,as with any animal, you do get attached to them, but the girls are back to normal now and my daughters dog goes home today, so now they are freshly wormed, tomorrow its bath time,so they are sparkling clean going to their new owners,it will be quiet round here after they have gone..
