  • Using Tree shreddings in a run? Advice please

    Hi
I'm just building a new run and plan to floor it with patio slabs and then use the shreddings that some Tree Surgeon guys have left over from a tree removal.
They can drop these off when I need them and they are pretty cheap.
I'm planning to have 4 or 5 inches for the hens to scratch about in, then shovel them out every so often.
Do you think that this is OK?
Is there anything in the shreddings that might be harmful?

I've used random tree shreddings for about 5 years. I think the only one you need to beware of is Yew. The tree surgeon did mention to me that there was Elder in the last lot so I'm not sure whether that is problematic too. Chickens seem to leave alone any stuff thats harmful to them. Mine have been ok anyway and I'm sure I'd have noticed by now if any illness o deceased chooks were connected with input of new shreddings! I think the answer is suck it and see!

i get tree chippings delivered free in the Autumn- they are great provided you don't use yew - that would be a disaster!!!
