  • Yolk colour

All you chicken keepers, could you tell me if the colour of the yolk can identify a happy bird? Reason I ask is that I buy free range eggs locally and the yolks are dark yellow. I couldn't get them this last weekend, so I ordered some from Asda (Happy eggs, advert's on the telly). The yolks are the lightest lemon I've ever seen and the cooked white was a bit "rubbery". Just wondered.

Could be age, but greenery fed to the chickens (or, if they have access to, say grass) will give a more deep yellow/orangey yolk. I find the greenery makes the yolks thicker too?

I don't really believe in the 'happy hens' adverts etc.

Anyways, that said - one of my chickens once laid an egg with a yolk going on to be green! Greedy little cow seemed just to be scoffing all my veg plants rather than her feed

Some feeds also contain yolk enhancer (ie Colouring)

Before we kept chickens I always used to be sure and buy free range eggs so I am really surprised to see the huge difference in colour of our own eggs. I really hadn't ex
pected them to be so much darker yellow.

I had to buy eggs on site this week - first time I've bought eggs in over two years. I'd forgotten how pale yolks can be!
