  • Had to dispatch a neighbours chook..........

Arrived at the allotment last night to find my neighbours very upset about one of their snall game birds which was falling over all the time. They wanted to put it out of its misery but couldn't bring themselves to do it.
Now don't get me wrong, I don't relish dispatching chooks but because I could see it was suffering and because it wasn't one of mine I offered to help them out.

I told them I was going to light my woodburner anyway (which I wasn't!) and that I would put it out of its misery then cremate the body in the woodburner.

Poor thing had an 'aged' look about it and they'd been given it a year or so ago so goodness knows how old it was.

Alls well that ends well and she's now in chooky heaven.

well done Snadge, kind thing to do.
We have had rabbits wandering around at work with Myx. Young lad at work has been dispatching them. He is quite upset by it and I have said I will do the next one. Not sur if I can though

      Well done Snadge.
I keep a humane dispatcher in my car in case I ever have an emergency. Must admit I prefer to pay the vet to do the job if I can but sometimes there just isn't the time. I'm also lucky enough to have a neighbour at home who will dispatch for me too.

I would think that dispatching isn't something everyone could do. It's a good thing you were there to help Snadge, at least she's out of her misery and eating worms in a better place.

I am chief dispatcher here, have done turkeys, ducks, chickens, rabbits.....I think there is something wrong with me as it doesn't seem to bother me. mind you - if its a favourite elderly hen I get upset......and gleeful when its an annoying cockerel for the pot!

Snadge that was really well done.
Funnily enough it was your description of dispatching a cockeral which gave me the nerve to do my first one. I can't say I find it easy, but then again I'd rather do it myself and know it's as stressfree as possible.
Your neighbours must have been so relieved that you made it stressfree for them.
