  • Can I wash her bum?

    Hi

Our white legbar played in the flower border 2 days ago, digging a lovely scrape and covering herself with soil!! She had a great time.....there was only her head showing at one point.
Well she got out and shook...then preened....and shook again, and by the evening was white as snow - except for her bottom!!!
Two days later and she still has a black bum!
The question is this - as she obviously can't get right around there to clean, should we try and wash it?
Or do you think it will eventually sort itself out?
What do you think we should do?

It'll sort itself out but if you find it upsetting you can wash it! My leghorn nearly always has a black bum and she's my best layer so it obviously doesn't affect her!
If you do wash it make sure she doesn't get chilled afterwards - the weather here is about 10 degrees colder today as well as drizzling on and off all day.

I have 2 old ex-batts that frequently have dirty bums. They have a bath about once a fortnight. I try to wait until it's a nice warm day and bath outside, towel drying as well as I can. If the weather stays awful then I take them inside in a dog cage until they are dry. Not sure why they get dirty bums and not the others so I think it's just that they are old and can't shoot the poo out so far!

I too had ex batt's with dirty bums and now and then they would have a bath and a blow dry(hairdryer on cool setting of course), one in particular used to love it

Mine don't mind the bath but neither like the hairdryer.

I use a dryer I had for the dogs when I used to show them. Its much quieter than the average hair dryer and none of the chooks seem to mind it

By the replies so far do you think there's a business in setting up a chooks' pamper parlour?

I think they'd just eat the fish
