  • Scaley leg mite and chicks

    Hello,
just a quick question. A few days ago I noticed that my modern game broody had a swollen 'ankle'. I felt it and it wasn't full of fluid, it felt firm and warm. Now I have seen that she has pecked two scales off, making her leg bleed. Now, I usually treat SLM with benzyl benzoate, but can I apply this on bleeding legs (they've scabbed up now) and while she is brooding chicks (10days old)?? And do you think this is what it is? Her legs are very smooth so any lifting of the scales would be very obvious and there aren't any....
I'm not overly worried but wonder if i should be applying something. She is separate from the other birds.
    Thanks,
    JM

You could slather it in Vaseline, which won't irritate the sore bits, and if it is scaley leg mite, will also help smother the mite. Remember the chicks will need treating too if it is SLM. It could also just be an injury - she could have caught it somehow and in trying to get free pulled the scales off.

Aha! vaseline! I hadn't thought of that. Thanks RH.
