  • What's next?

When I first got chickens I did what most new owners do, fell in love with chooks went a bit mad and bought loads of different breeds.
Well the pennies are in for the last batch of growers.
I've been very determined, and after a great deal of thought and some sadness, have sold the ones that were really only there because I liked them.
Now I have a core of breeds that I will keep because they are my favourites, or are practical (layers or broodies) and that also fit in with my available land (so my gorgeous poots have gone (sob) because I dont have anywhere to keep their feathered feet in good enough condition for showing, and lets face it, looking pretty is the one thing they are really good at)
Now I'm improving the coops and runs, and will slowly improve the quality of my remaining chooks to either showing or high laying. The only thing I intend to do is to add Ixworths or another rare breed as I would like to help the effort.
Feel free to laugh your socks off when I fail to stick by this...

Thats a really good plan Hilly! Just for the record I have a batch of Ixworth eggs under my broody as we speak! Due to hatch in 2 weeks. We have a breeder locally so thought I'd do my bit. Like you I have a few who are pretty but thats about it! Not enough to cause any problems so they can stay! Have enough broody types to sink a ship!

That's what I've been trying to do.... there are hundreds of breeds that I love, but I've tried to be fairly sensible and stay away from Brahmas and Poots cos of the feathered leg thing....

Although am currently falling in love with Wyandottes.... oh no!

Here's where I have to confess to having fallen in love with one of my Buff Orpington Chicks!

I'll 'arf arf' you JM Orloffs and Ixworths......takes deep breath and counts to sixty
OWG I've kept my wyandottes (bantams) they are super little birds, and tough as old boots, and show quality, whilst hard to achieve, fetch very good prices. But Brahmas will come one day I'm afraid, their feathery feet are nowhere near as extreme as pooters. And they are just teddy bears with feathers.
G4 I've got blue orps..big feathery lumps of lunacy, not great layers, but lovely to have around.
Suechooks, thought of Ixworths for practicality as well as being rare, be interesting to hear your thoughts as yours grow on.
TBH if I had somewhere for them I'd have Sultans..but they are even less practical than pooters.
