  • Duck Pond

    Hi,

We've recently got 2 campbell ducks last weekend. For the first couple of days we used a large shallow (2 inch) tray but wanted something deeper for them to swim in. We bought a much deeper tray (nearer to a foot) but they can't get in it.

We don't want to dig into the grass, but can someone suggest what we could use instead?

Someone told us a sand pit from Argos might do the trick, but they seem a bit high to me? Buy Chad Valley Apple Sand and Water Pit at Argos.co.uk - Your Online Shop for Sand pits and sand.

    Thanks in advance x

Could you not put some wood, or sbricks for them to use as steps... Sounds like they are just being lazy

I've got a turtle-shaped sandpit type thing (same idea as the apple one) and my campbells and runner ducks are fine with it.

If they are still quite young, a couple of bricks round the edge might help, but once they are fully grown, they will be able to clamber into it quite easily.

Don't make a 'built-in' pond! You will need to be able to empty, clean and refill it 4 or 5 times a week.. With a built in pond (that isn't a natural watercourse etc) you will need an industrial grade filter and pump (and electricity to run it!) which costs a fortune!

Do they not need a proper pond with a Tory island duck hotel in the middle? Good luck with them whatever you choose. Watch for Mr Fox!

It was top of my list, but I checked with OH and its not allowed according to his expenses rules.

We'll try to bricks and see how they get on.

That pond is emptied, cleaned and refilled every day for most of the year.... they also have a few large tubs for dunking their heads in (that's the most important part) as well.... I'm hoping to get a second 'pond' next year once the spring arrives!

My f-i-l donated his unused foot trough from the farm for my geese. It's about 6' x 2' and about 1' deep. No good for swimming, but lets them have a really good splash. Try an agricultural merchant/farm supply, or builders supply, they have all sorts of weird trays and troughs. When we had a taller kiddies hard plastic pool we built a ramp up with blocks and bricks covered with a plank with raised struts for grip. But you need to put some blocks in the water, just below water level, for them to stand on to hop over, otherwise the silly twerps tend to go beak first down it as they hurl themselves at the side to get a leap out.
