my fourth hen - completes my little garden flock

She's settled in well and only has a spot of bother from our white sussex - she hasn't layed an egg yet but she is only 20 weeks

Welcome Roxy. Comb looks quite big so sure it won't be long before she starts to lay.

What breed is it? She looks like a boy to me

My thoughts too Scarlet. That tail feather looks suspiciously male.

Oh no, is that why the comb looks so big then?

Possibly. If a hen has a comb that size I would really expect it to be in lay. It's either going to lay or start to crow, then you'll know for sure!

Hmmm. Looks quite masculine with that big wavy tail feather!

Well I'm waiting with bated breath to know if this chicken is crowing or laying!

Well we did have our suspicions but she is definitely not crowing and she's nearly 21 weeks now. Surely we'd have heard a crow by now? She sounds very chicken and doesn't dominate the 3 girls I already have. We're still waiting for the deciding factor - either an egg or a cockle doodle doo The breeder will swap him for a her if it does turn out to be a cockeral.

With that breeding, you have a good chance of blue eggs (if she really is a she).
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

well if not I will swap her for one of her sisters so may well still get blue eggs.

Would you not have expected us to have heard a crow by now if it's a Cockeral? Yesterday she/he was having a really good shout but it was still very buk buk buk buk chiiicckkken just like the other girls do and the others don't seem to treat Roxy with the respct you'd expect of a cockeral - LOL

The only way to be 100% sure is an egg, or a crow....

On a second look, I'd say that's a male tail feather there, too! Incidentally, my Hens don't respect their Fella (Asbo) at all, they actually peck at him if he's in their way. I've noticed that the Fellas I hatched make chickeny noises too, until the testosterone kicked in. Have it's legs started to go red at all? Mine did just before they started crowing. Fingers crossed for you.
