  • can you use disinfectant to clean inside of coop?

    hi all,

can anyone tell me if a disinfectant solution is okay to clean inside of coop out with. i have heard vinegar solution is also an option but just wondered what you all do out there when cleaning the insides of the houses.

I use ***** fluid and it is a disinfectant. Brilliant stuff. Remember to air well afterwards. Important to clean early enough in the day.

I mop out with one of the farm type disinfectants -can't remember the name offhand but its ?something V! ( might be Barrier V) There are a few about that are ok to use. The other one I use more frequently is Stalosan F which is a powder disinfectant. Just sprinkle it about in the coop after sweeping out all debris.
Poultry Shield is another produced for specifically poultry housing and it kills red mite too. I spray with that in the red mite season each week.

I don't use anything, except a sprinkle of Stalosan (dry disinfectant powder) now and again if the floor of the house has some damp patches from wet poo. There is no need to disinfect the house every time you clean it. For a few hens removal of the muck underneath the perches once or twice a week is enough. If you regularly make a wooden house wet from disinfectant or other solutions you risk mould spores developing and encourage rot.

There was a mention a few weeks ago that Victoria Roberts (well known Poultry vet) has said that ***** is toxic to poultry. Must say I have used it in the past. I only use it now in the runs when they are going to be empty for a time after digging out surface.

Ooh thanks for letting me know. I read it off the forum thread a few months ago when we had the hens. Never realised

***** Fluid is toxic, fullstop, but used with sense, it just won't get where it can harm the livestock. Don't use it where there are 'bits' that might tempt a hen to peck, don't allow hens into still-damp accommodation and don't overdo it anyway.
The active ingredient in ***** is very similar to creosote, so really, the same cautions apply.
The one place I would NEVER use ***** is on soil!

What do you use? Or do you not use anything?

after having good success with ***** i found that it was taking too long to dry,so i cleaned the coop out daily and used smite powder weekly,we never had any more problems with mites or lice, and the girls got their bath (puppy shampoo) on a regular basis, every 3 months,it worked for me so good luck with whatever way you decide to go,after all you have all the experts on here to ask,i did and they always put me right...

I don't have chooks at present (and haven't for some time). If I was wanting to disinfect soil I would simply use lime, if that isn't sufficient the problem needs a more drastic solution, like concrete!
When I was keeping chooks they were sufficiently free ranging that actually disinfecting wasn't really essential, although I did clean out under whaerver they had made a habit of perching for the night. The reason I wouldn't use ***** on soil is that it is one of the places where, if any trace is left (and I'm not convinced rain would completely remove it) they might end up swalowing some when they are moved back.
***** has most potential for harm if swallowed, so any possibility of it being where it could get swallowed is what I would avoid.

We use the brown Dettol . Not very strong, but better than nothing!
( I recall the clear Dettol isn't safe for poultry)
